Abstract

A review of the historiography of New Spanish architecture reveals that interest in the Philippines has been extremely marginal, if not virtually nonexistent, despite the relationship that linked the Asian archipelago, New Spain, and therefore Spain, from 1565 to 1821. This article offers several guidelines for understanding the causes of this omission, which persisted throughout the twentieth century, using the specific example of the Hospicio de Santo Tomás de Villanueva.
