Abstract
Architecture in New Spain has traditionally been analyzed through the work of the major architects of the viceroyalty. This perspective, however, has tended to minimize the participation of other professionals who contributed significantly to the transformation of the urban landscape, particularly military engineers.
During the second half of the eighteenth century, a considerable number of these engineers were sent to American territories to strengthen defensive systems in response to the possibility of invasion. Their work, however, extended beyond defense, as they participated in the supervision, design, and execution of civil and administrative works and in urban planning, responding to the political, economic, and social demands of the period.
The participation of military engineers in New Spanish architecture is especially relevant within the cultural and intellectual transformations that characterized this period. The aim of this study is therefore to highlight the formation of several emblematic buildings from the second half of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries through an initial review of archival documentary sources, subsequently comparing this information with surviving buildings.
