Abstract

Spanish corralas and Mexican vecindades are historical forms of popular housing and expressions of collective dwelling in the Hispanic world. They share an origin in the courtyard-house typology and are closely related to processes of urbanization and social inequality. The article challenges traditional readings that reduce them to architectural objects or social problems and instead proposes a critical phenomenology of heritage centered on lived experience. From this perspective, dwelling is understood as an everyday construction in which practices, social relations, and structures of power converge.

The study also examines the tension between appropriation and control in the social production of space, as well as the effects of heritage-making and urban commodification, which tend to privilege material fabric over ways of life. The analysis shows that heritage is not a neutral field but a contested space in which forms of dwelling are legitimized or excluded. It therefore argues for rethinking conservation beyond the built object and for incorporating the lived dimension as a fundamental axis, beyond political discourse or use.

Keywords

Collective dwelling, popular housing, heritage phenomenology, collective memory, urban gentrification.
