Abstract
With the award of a Juan March Foundation fellowship, José Enrique Ruiz-Castillo and Ricardo Urgoiti Gutiérrez traveled to Mexico City, where they spent four months working in the office of Cubiertas Ala under Félix Candela. For the two young architects—both interested in shell structures—their stay and experiences proved decisive for their later professional practice in Spain, where they drew on the distinctive Mexican model to create Construcciones Laminares during a period of rapid economic development. This article recounts and analyzes what they learned in Mexico through previously unpublished documentation, helping to clarify the extent to which they emulated Candela’s ideas and how both architects put them into practice.
